SYDI is an NGO registered in 2008 to help address the socio-cultural & economic problems afflicting Nairobi’s marginalised youths.
One of our initiatives is Yassets, a football club made up of former street children who have been rehabilitated successfully. Yassets participates in the Kenya Super League and takes part in cultural exchange programmes in Europe. SYDI’s project coordinator, Christopher Wekesa, is himself a former Yassets player. He now plays for the national team Harambee Stars and the premier league side Gor Mahia.
Apart from Yassets, SYDI also supports the Satellite Mercenaries (a basketball team), Yassets Junior Boxing club and Tong-il-Modo (a Korean Martial arts club). Last year, Robinson Murundo, a member of Tong-Il-Modo, was called up to the team that represented Kenya at the Martial Arts World Cup in Argentina. Murundo won two silver medals and one bronze at the global meet.
Every year, SYDI also organizes a month-long football tournament that brings together over 15 teams from the poor neighbourhoods of Kawangware and Riruta Satellite.
